Building your resilience in a post Covid world will provide many ongoing challenges and opportunities. Living and working within a positive psychology framework that is utilised around the globe will help you to transform your relationships with family, friends, work colleagues and members of your community.  Key to building resilience is understanding the Five Basic Human Needs; this will help you to appreciate how meeting your needs motivates your Behaviour, which focuses on how and why you make need satisfying choices.
Your need satisfying choices may be helpful or unhelpful in your relationships; this depends on the choices that you make, for example, it is not fair for you to behave in a manner that adversely impacts on others, but solely meets your needs; this does not build positive and healthy relationships. Needs satisfying choices that consider those around you build positive and healthy relationships.

Dr Glasser identified Five Basic Human Needs; we all have these basic needs, but we do not all experience the same weighting for each need.  For example, you may have a high need for power or freedom, whereas others may have a high need for love and belonging, but we all have five basic human needs.
  1. Survival - physical needs, food, water, shelter, security
  2. Love and Belonging - connecting with other people that are important to you
  3. Power - success, acknowledgement from others, achievement, power with and for not over
  4. Freedom - to have choices and control in your life... freedom from... and freedom to...
  5. Fun - laughter, the genetic reward for learning

Human behaviour is best explained by referring to the four components of total behaviour, which provides an insight into the most effective way to drive your behaviour.  Dr. Glasser ‘s teachings say that "All behaviour is purposeful." That is, ALL of your behaviour is your best attempt at the time, given the resources at your disposal (knowledge, skills, etc.) to meet your needs.

Four Components of Behaviour:
  1. Acting
  2. Thinking
  3. Feeling
  4. Physiology
  • We have control over acting and thinking.
  • We do not have as much control over feeling and physiology.
  • The choices we make in our thinking and acting affect our feeling and physiology.
When more and more demands are placed on you, surely the focus needs to be on building your resilience and capacity to cope into the future, regardless of what the world throws at you. By understanding your basic human needs and total behaviour you can create a space to flourish and grow both personally and professionally.

Understanding the power of making needs satisfying choices and total behaviour you can build your resilience, mental fitness, health, and wellbeing.
